El fotógrafo Johnny Joo ha pasado los últimos 10 años explorando lugares olvidados con la finalidad de  de preservar sus historias para las generaciones futuras.

En su última serie de fotos, que se adentra en los pasillos ya olvidados del Centro de Desarrollo de Stonewall Jackson, el que fue una vez el centro penitenciario de menores del Condado de Cabarrus en Carolina del Norte. deja al descubierto la lóbrega realidad actual de espacios vacíos, indumentaria olvidada, hasta un piano destrozado. Todos elementos de un tiempo olvidado que pueden resultar tristes para algunos, pero  para Johnny tiene un enfoque absolutamente diferente.

Dijo: «Esto inspira miedo porque  es triste, tiene relación con lo que la gente quiere olvidar. Es algo que siempre trata de borrarlo de la historia».

Russell Smith, creció en este lugar de reclusión y es ahora una activista que protesta contra la violencia en las cárceles. Alega que fue atacada y violada cuando estuvo presa en las instalaciones en la década de los 60, desde los 13 años a los 15 años.

Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el centro realizó un experimento esterilizando y efectuando  la vasectomía en seis adolescentes como parte de los esfuerzos de todo el Estado para limitar la «debilidad mental».
